What can I do to get more power out of a 4 cylinder Jeep Wrangler engine?
-
I have a 1999 2.4 liter Jeep wrangler Inline 4 engine and i am wondering what i can do to give it more power. I know there will be lots of people saying just get a 6 cylinder but im just wondering about the 4 cyl right now. So what can i do to give it more power and what are approximate costs?

Answer:
there are no performance upgrades for a four cylinder jeep, this is way too underpowered, and the six cylinder gets complaints all the time on here, there is a southern cailf jeep club, I read an article and to get the performance you want I suggest you look into a chevy 350 swap. Since this sounds like not what you want, you cannot make up something that is not available. you could try, but in the end the four banger is not going to perform, it is tough, dependable and s l o w that is what it is, I suppose you could rebuild it, and add a turbo (thats about the only way to get enough power to make the four banger go. But without a kit, or a specific turbo/ engine combination, you are getting into unknowns, and a turbo is not something that would work well 4x 4 . again the money, would be equal to a 350 engine itself, and the v8 has been done many times, has great bottom end torque and all the bugs are worked out of the swap, you need a 350 the computer and wiring harness and a 4L60E transmission that works with that engine and computer for a durable trouble free 4x4 engine swap. good luck.

Your '99 should have the 2.5 engine. The 2.4 didn't come into Jeeps until '03, which actually may work to your favor. If you have the right intake, you can put the throttle body from a 4.0 and flow more air in. http://www.quadratecforum.com/showpost.php?p=857496 Quadratec.com lists a few exhaust systems for the 2.5, as well as some cold air intake options. I have an 03 with the 2.4l DOHC for which there are very few performance upgrades. I was able to find a throttle body spacer that made a noticeable difference in driveability by giving me more torque at lower rpm. My motor is a very different animal from yours, but it may help. For my Jeep, it was the best $80 I spent...way more effective that the cold air intake that cost a good bit more. A lot of people on here will want you to just slap in a six like you were changing a spark plug (or tell you to buy another Jeep...which, as an answer to a question like this, is pretty useless), but I don't think it's that easy...and neither do the folks at quadratec: http://www.quadratecforum.com/showpost.php?p=857494 Lower gears may help. I'm planning to try that out myself...eventually. In the meantime, I'm still thoroughly enjoying my Jeep, despite what the naysayers here may have you believe. It's still a Jeep (thing). A buddy of mine has a 99 with 1 ton axles, lifted up into the clouds and 33+ inch tires, all turned by a pretty much stock 2.5l 4 cyl. The only engine mod he's done is a half-rigged cold air intake (off of an Explorer), and it gets around just fine.

I had a 2.5L 1998 Wrangler. I put 31 inch tires on it and it was simply a dog. I did a cold air intake and catback exhaust and header. These mods did virtually NOTHING for performance. Actually the exhaust sounded like a sick honda and I switched back to the stock muffler. As for gearing, you already have 4.10 in the axles. These Jeeps were set up quite well stock and they breath just fine, just don't make much power. Off road, especially when in low...you could not tell the difference in the inline 6 or the 4. The 4 banger has the right amount of torque and gearing for going slow, just not to go fast on the road. Engine swaps can be done, but then you need a tranny too and lots of custom mounts and everything. Either very expensive or very time consuming and lots of expertise needed. The 4 cylinder is why I sold my Wrangler. Now I'm in a Grand Cherokee with a 4.7 and it has plenty of power.

I'm sure you can upgrade to a better flowing exhaust, including headers, possibly an intake manifold is available for it also.A cold air induction setup.all fairly simple external changes. Then if you want to get into the engine itself you can try a cam change.as far as cost $1500 to $2000

i have the four and HATE it the only complaint i have about it, no the six doesnt mount on the tranny doesnt either. and it will rip the rear end apart. and the Throttle Body spacer really does nothing at all except waste money

You can swap it out. There is no benefit to the 4 cylinder. It makes less power and gets the same mileage.
emiller1998
Throw it out. The 4 cylinder is a POS. Poor design, poor performance.
