Is a suspension lift or a body lift better for a Silverado?

Removing suspension lift from 97 jeep TJ and replacing it with a Body lift?

  • i bought a used 97 Jeep wrangler TJ about a year ago. it has a 4 inch skyjacker lift on it. its causing Vibrations in the rear Diff and the skyjacker control arm bushings have to be replaced about once a year. the alignment i cant get right no matter how many times i try which is causing my expensive 33's to ware quickly. this lift is also stiff *** hell. its to rigid it dosen't feel like it even has a suspension. its a very cheap crappy lift.would it be cheaper to keep maintaining this jeep with this crap suspension or would it be cheaper just to Buy all stock suspension parts and revert it back to stock and then put 3 inches of baby lift? i know with stock suspension i will eliminate many of the issues i have now. but what other issues will i have with the body lift? i don't really go off road much. just on the beach and trails stuff like that. nothing a stock jeep cant handle. so would it make more since to keep maintaining this jeep with this lift that is causing issues? or revert it back to stock suspension and then go 3 inches body lift? in the long run which one do you think will be Cheaper?

  • Answer:

i'm guessing the springs were upgraded when the lift kit was installed. prolly shocks as well. likely you have to soft compound tires for a daily street driver. those would be the major cause in vibrations, bushing replacement, and tire wear. i would go to a shop, have them look at what you have, and suggest a good down grade (street grade) in those areas. softer ride and better tire wear. the act of lifting alone doesn't cause this. could be that weaker shocks and harder compound/less agressive tread tires is all you need. lots cheaper than what you have in mind. one point, lifting the suspension does raise the center of gravity. that does have a play in tire wear on the street. scrubbing around corners. body lift are less influential on tire wear, but raise center of gravity as well. as long as you lift, no matter how, you will experience excessive tire wear on the street. if the ring/pinion is making noise and you have lift shackles for the springs in back, removing them wont change anything. if you have lift blocks in back, and go to lift shackles, that will help. hope that helps you make your decision.

I like Holey's answer and to add to it a bit. I would most definitely keep the suspension lift over a body lift any day. I suggest looking at the Pro Comp Xtreme A/T tires as they are a great all around tire and looking into better shocks such as some adjustable ones. Pro Comp and Fox make some great adjustable shocks and if you find yourself having a little extra money sometime I suggest King Off-Road shocks. This should take care of the stiffness. As far as the alignment is concerned I suggest taking your Jeep to an actual off-road shop such as 4 Wheel Parts (which is a national chain) and having them professionally correct the alignment issue for you. If anything give them a call and ask their opinion on the subject. Good luck.
