Jeep engine sputters after prolonged winching; vapor lock or over burden on the electrical sys?
-
1997 wrangler 4.0L sport 12.5K winch 2 pairs of Aux lights(I usesually turn them off during winching) I assume I have the factory alternator. After a hard winching the motor will sit and sputter if I apply any gas Idle is fine, but if I try to go any where it sputters I crawl away as slow as possible and eventually it goes away Engine idles fine during the winch My last two hard winches the volt indicator would swoop way down, so I would have to do a foot or two and let it rebuild voltage, and repeat Every now and then the check engine light will indicate during these sputtering conditions, but the next day it goes away before I go find out what it is.(only thing I could guess would be O2 sensor, getting over heated and causing the sputtering) Im trying to figure out if I am getting my self in harder and harder situations and its just something I have to deal with after hard winching, or if something is failing and needs to be handled. Two possible problems I could guess: -Vapor lock- from heat build up in the engine bay from stationary engine operation -Over burdened electrical sys-after wires heat up from winching they can’t carry as much power to provide correct spark to the engine. My two options: -Insulate injectors[some kind of jeep tech service bulletin] vent the hood to help dissipate more heat during stationary operation -start running a second deep cycle battery with an isolator for the winch/lights/stereo/etc Additional questions: The deep cycle is supposed to be better because it can drain to zero with out damaging battery? Some specs show hooking everything except starter up to second battery, but I would lean towards just my accessories, and leave the first battery as close to factory as possible. If the second deep cycle battery drains to zero, does that mean that everything on that batter(winch and lights) will not work? Obviously my intent is to get out of a hole and haul *** to safety, then sit around and let stuff recharge, I don’t like this sitting in the hole recharging, so I can finally run my winch again. Only to try to fly away and the jeep sitting there sputtering.

Answer:
Sounds like the battery is dead and needs to be recharged!

you need to ad another battery or keep the engine rpm up while winching your voltage is droping too low during winching & the engine electronics are trying to shut down.

I own a 97 TJ. Without starting it turn the key on-off-on-off-on within five seconds. Leave it on the third time and watch the odometer. The mileage readout will dissapear and your trouble codes will be displayed. Have a look at this link to find out what the codes mean... http://www.allpar.com/fix/80s-codes.html If you need any more help ask in the TJ tech section on http://www.jeepforum.com
