How to put 1995 jeep cherokee sport into 4x4?
-
I do not really understand how to do this. I always get the part time light. WHen i go to put it in 4L it will go for a second then acts like it came out of gear. It sounds like one of those niddles on the spin the wheel games. I just can not figure out how to do the 4x4 thing. I am new to it so maybe I am not doing it right. Its a 4 door 6v 1995 jeep cherokee sport.

Answer:
Usually it is better to have the vehicle stopped then put the transmission in neutral. Move the lever to 4lo. Put the transmission into drive and go. You will know if you are in 4lo because the car wants to go way slow. Ignore the light. To take it out of 4lo come to a complete stop then put transmission in neutral move lever to 4hi or 2wd put transmission in reverse and back up briefly then stop. Put transmission in drive and go. Hope this helps and enjoy your cherokee.

You can also try rolling straight at maybe 2-3mph, putting the transmission into Neutral and then putting it into 4LO, don't pause on neutral, keeps going to 4LO. But some Jeeps like it when they are standing still. 4 FULL TIME to 4 LO or 4 LO to 4 FULL TIME With the vehicle rolling at 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5 km/h), shift the transmission into N (Neutral). While the vehicle is coasting at 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5 km/h), shift the transfer case lever firmly to the desired position. Do not pause in transfer case N (Neutral). NOTE: Pausing in transfer case N (Neutral) in vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission may require shutting the engine OFF to avoid gear clash while completing the shift. If difficulty occurs, shift the transmission to N (Neutral), hold foot on brake, and turn the engine OFF. Make shift to desired mode. NOTE: Shifting into or out of 4LO is possible with the vehicle completely stopped, however difficulty may occur due to the mating clutch teeth not being properly aligned. Several attempts may be required for clutch teeth alignment and shift completion to occur. The preferred method is with the vehicle rolling 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5 km/h). Avoid attempting to engage or disengage 4LOwith the vehicle moving faster than 2 to 3 mph (3 to 5km/h).

4wd Part Time should only be used off road, same with 4lo. If you have 4wd FULL time you can use it on any road surface. As far as your issue with 4lo your shifter linkage could be worn and not fully engaging the gears. 4wd Part time and Full time can be shifted into and out of on the fly (while moving), 4lo is best done at speeds of about 5mph or less.
