How do you turn off the Check Engine light in a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee without taking it to a dealer?

  • The check engine light came on while relocating from texas to new mexico. It had a load in the back and didn't like the rolling hills on the highway. It has a 6 cyl and is running in perfect condition. There's nothing wrong with it and I just want to turn off the check engine light that's illuminating on the instrument panel without having to take it to a mechanic or a dealer. Is there a way it can be reset?

    If you have an Auto Zone store in your area you can take it there and they have a machine that checks what the problem is at no cost. After you find out what the problem is, you can decide whether or not to take it to a dealer. If you don't have any Auto Zone, try any other auto parts store chain in your part of the country

Did it come on after you put gas in the vehicle. Loosen the gas cap and then retighten. It might take two times. If that doesn't work, then you need to take it to a mechanic.

Try disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes - it may but technically SHOULD NOT work. The only other option is to get an OBD-2 scanner, the cheapest one is about $50.

You say there's nothing wrong with it but actually if the check engine light came on something is wrong. It may not be serious, but something is wrong. You can disconnect the battery and the check engine light may go out, but will eventually come back on if the problem is not corrected. Auto Zone can retrieve the fault code and find the cause of your check engine light for free. They can tell you what it will take to fix it and reset it but if you ignore the problem the check engine light will always come back on.
