Why will my 94 civic not start?

Why does 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee run great and then it will start missing?

  • My husband has had this happen several times in town and on the highway...on the highway the engine light will come on and then it will lose power and miss he can't get it to go more than 20 mph. Help!

    Hi, have the vehicle taken to a jeep dealer that has a co-pilot for OBD-1 vehicles. If they have a good diagnostic tech there he'll hook this thing up for you. So when the problem occurs you simply push a button and it records the data from your computer in the car. You than take the vehicle and co-pilot in and the diagnostic tech will look at the data and it should reveal to him the problem. Another suggestion is the coil could be going bad which is very common on the 4.0L and 5.2L Jeeps. I would put my money on it that is the problem.

sounds like a fuel filter to me, check the spark plugs, i could be wrong ( its happened before)

well start with a tune up. Gas filter, air filter, plugs, etc. Then you may want to check your fuel pump pressure. Since it's pretty cheap have the distributer cap and rotor replaced. Inspect yrou plug wires make sure they aren't restingon any potentially hot surfaces. Given the severity of the problem (no more than 20mph) sounds alot like a fuel pump goingon the frits.

My first thought is the fuel pump. Chrysler(makes Jeep) has had problems with electric fuel pumps since the early 90's. Make sure you have at least 1/4 tank of gas in it, especially on hot days. If you notice the problem when it's hotter outside, or your low on fuel, chances are it's the pump. Your other option is to pay a shop to run diagnostic tests using a scanner. It's usaually an hour labor to check it, but that's better than your Jeep dying on the road.
