Do All Honda Civic VTI's Have a Vtec Engine?

How do I know if my 1999 Honda Civic has a VTEC engine?

  • The engine was rebuilt at 122,000 miles, I bought the car when it had 150,000 miles on it. I know the stock engine does not come with a VTEC engine, it is a D16Y7 Engine, but I know a lot of people do put VTEC parts in these cars, and since it was rebuilt I thought it was a possibility. How can I tell? Thanks

^The above... Actually it would not say VTEC on the valve cover. In 1996 Honda stopped stamping the VTEC logo onto the valve cover of SOHC VTEC engines even if they had it. Best way to tell is to just look for the VTEC solenoid found on the left and back side of the cylinder head near the distributor. It will look like this: http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/4070/pic14ns.jpg

It should say VTEC on teh valve cover. But anyways since you have a Y7 in the car, thats not vtec. Unless....someone just used a Y7 block and has a Y8 head on it. But then again, you'd see the vtec solenoid mounted somewhere near the distributor, if you dont, then you have a non-vtec engine.
