Which engine should I get for my Civic?

96 Civic Ex Engine Dieing need to replace but confused and not sure what to get?

  • I have a 96 Civic Ex Sedan Automatic and my d16y7 engine is burning oil and I need a new engine. I initially wanted to get a JDM D15B Vtec or d16Z6 but I was told that if my original engine did not have Vtec it would be difficult and a waste of money to get an engine with Vtec. The weird thing is that i thought all 96 civic's came with a d16y8 which has Vtec but for some reason I have a d16y7 non Vtec. If it turns out that I cant get an engine with Vtech what is the best engine I can get with around $700. I was looking at the D15B non Vtec but im not sure how much horsepower that has?

  • Answer:

If it's an EX it should've came with the Y8, so the Y8 should drop right in. If you have EJ8 in your vin# then it's an EX and VTEC ready. Otherwise, just replace the engine with the same one. Also, the Z6 is OBD1 your car's OBD2 so that engine won't work.

Your car is an ex model without a ex motor. The original ex motor is d16y8. I believe the wiring for vtec is there. Maybe the previous owner (if you are) changed the engine. The d15b will work for your car, but you will have to change your manifold from the d16y7 to the d15b. also there are many versions of the d15b. ( d15 series are around 90 hp -130 hp depending on engine) Good luck.

If your original civic was a EX then it should of came with a VTEC engine. Drop in the JDM D15B

First off, you can swap whatever motor you feel like swapping into it, vtec or not. Different motors come with more or less work to get it runnin, but it's all about a matter of opinion when deciding what to drop in.. my opinion however, if you're trying to stay with a SOHC, go with the jdm d15b. next, i really hope you're going with an entire engine swap, not just the motor, and you're gonna get rid of your auto tranny. if not, it's kind of a waste of time because you're not going to have much potential with a sohc auto. (even if it is jdm) good luck with the build, & don't forget that there's tons of DOHC motors that would give you 2x the hp.
