Why does my 99 Honda Civic randomly stall while idle & while driving?

99 honda civic temp gauge keeps going up and down slowly while driving?

  • I just had my engine replaced with an engine from japan because I had a blown head gasket and my car would overheat once the radiator ran dry. After having my engine replaced the temp gauge goes up and down after driving for a bit (like 20 min into the drive) and especially when I go up hill but the needle never goes all the way up and the car doesn't overheat. Any suggestions on what it could be? Cooling sensor, thermostat, thermostat sensor? Please help!

probably just a simple defect. Its happens after engines are replaces or rebuilt, its just a wiring problem on the thermostat sensor nothing extreme. If it really bothers you just go to your local michanic that wont screw you over and have them check it out. should cost more then $20.

It could be that the cooling system wasn't "burped" but a more likely cause is that the thermostat was replaced with an aftermarket thermostat. Aftermarket thermostats often do that - they just don't move freely so they oscillate around the proper temperature. I went through 4 aftermarket thermostats in my 1985 Volvo to get it to stop that and I finally wised up and got one from the dealer. It worked perfectly.
