I can hear the antenna motor running when i turn on the radio. Whats the cheapest way to fix this.

Answer:
The cheapest way to do it is to replace the antenna mast. The antenna mast has a plastic toothed belt on the end of it that strips out and when that happens the motor runs but the mast doesn't go up or down. Honda sells replacement masts. You don't have to remove the motor to replace the mast. Here's the instructions from the service manual on how to replace the antenna mast on your car. Its not hard to do if you have patience. Removal The antenna mast alone can be replaced without having to remove the power antenna motor. 1. Remove the antenna nut, spacer and bushing (this is the nut and bushing on top of the motor and at the base of the antenna mast where the antenna mast comes up through) 2. Carefully withdraw the antenna mast while extending it by turning the radio switch ON. Installation 1. Carefully direct the teeth of the antenna mast drive cable as shown, and insert the drive cable into the antenna housing. 2. Check for engagement of the cable teeth to the drive gear by carefully moving the cable up and down. 3. Clean the antenna mast housing threads. 4. Turn the radio switch "OFF", and let the motor pull the drive cable inside the antenna housing. 5. Install the bushing and spacer. 6. Tighten the antenna nut. 2.3 N-m (0.23 kgf-m 1.7 Ibf-ft)

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but when you have problems with a power antenna not going up or down the only reliable fix is to replace the entire power antenna assembly, and that won't be cheap. It's not difficult to do if you're handy with tools, but the part is going to be expensive -- be prepared to pay $200.00 or more for a power antenna assembly for a Honda.

The simple fix-replace the mast only with a manual telescoping antennae. Leave the base alone. You'll still hear the antennae motor running when you turn on the radio but that is not a big deal. The cost for a new mast: $10 at an auto parts store. Don't bother fixing it since it can cost upwards of $100 and power antennas are frivolous anyway! The free fix is to simply extend the existing antennae and tape it open if it's prone to falling down.

well, if you want to fix it yourself you can do two things, go to ebay and bid on the link below cause to me, it sounds like the plastic gearing is stripped out on it.... or you can get an in car antenna and do away with the outer antenna. they are availiable at most automotive stores

what I would do is just pull it all the way out and leave it that way. My buddy in high school had a car w/an automatic antenna like that and his didn't work either, he would pull out before we got in the car and when we got out he'd push it back down or sometimes he'd just leave it but for some reason this antenna was pretty long and kinda looked funny out but unless your not concearned about the look then just leave it out....cheapest fix....its free, just manual labor to pull it out....

See if something didn't get stuck in it that is preventing it from going up and down. If nothing is evident, then I would maybe try a fuse or check the motor. Even if you can hear the motor, it doesn't mean that it is working properly. If all else fails, take it to a garage to see what it needs. Just don't let them do the work.

Check an with an audio shop or electronics store that sells and installs car audio equipment. You don't have to buy the entire assembly. The motor still works so that will save you a lot. There are universal power antnnas that will work. My mother in law bought one for her Camry. It only costed her about $120 (labor included). The entire assembly is almost triple that from the stealership.

I doubt if there is a cheap way of doing it, but you may try and find one at a salvage yard and replace it yourself. It is likely that the gears are stripped due to turning on the radio when there is ice on the body and blocking the antenna from raising. That happens a lot of the time.
