Honda Civic 2002 transmission and emission problems?
-
I have a 2002 honda Civic. It broke down a few weeks ago. I took it in the shop. they told me there was water in transmission and it froze me transmission. so they did a flush on it but when i went to pick my car up it wouldnt run. so they did another inspection on it and they told me the transmission failed. It would cost around $2000 to get a used transmission to replace it. so i thought the problem was because the cold weather froze my car so i didn't fix it. so i waited until a warm day and i tried to start my car to see if it runs. it did run! but the problem was that the car still had problems. when i was driving it, it felt like the car didn't know how to shift from a lower gear to a higher gear. The car didnt die. it just kept getting stuck in neutral and it wouldnt do anything when i pressed the gas. if i restart my car again it will run for like 5 minutes and it will do the same thing again. so after all that, i had to try to get my car home. On my way home, the malfunction indicator lamp came on. That means the emission has problems too. when i read the Owner's Manual, it says this can cause my car to put out excessive emissions(What does that mean?); continued operation may cause serious damage. So what exactly is wrong with my car? I hope i didn't damage anything when i tried to drive it after the emission lamp came on. Please help. Thanks very much.

Answer:
$2000 is about right for an automatic tranny. Dont worry about the emissions too much. If anything, your dash is lighting up with trouble codes. So it may not be your emissions. As long as your Cat is on your exhaust you should be fine. Here is what to do, take your car to advance auto. They will look up the trouble codes on your car for free. Then you will know what specifically is wrong. The biggest bank buster is gunna be the tranny. For future ref, if you had a clutch that $2000 bill would be more like $300 bucks to fix. Its never too late to learn. Good luck with it m8.

Unfortunately, early 2000 Honda's are notorious for transmission problems. http://www.carcomplaints.com/Honda/Civic/2002/ Honda may have a TSB for your problem. They may be able to pinpoint the problem better than a regular shop.

water in the transmission means radiator no good and the water/anti freeze mix destroyed the trans what has happened is the water /anti freeze has eaten the material (glue) that hold the material to the frictions only way to fix that will be either rebuilt or junk yard but the radiator also must be replaced and yes you have a possibility of failing the emissions test the torque converter will set a code and that is one of the tests you will need to pass since the water has ruined that too
