Why does my Honda accord keep cutting out intermittently?

Our 1992 Honda Accord keeps cutting off- what might be causing this problem?

  • I was starting the car the other day, and it wouldn't start. Of course, it's fuel injected. It has the 2.2L engine. But I decided to try tapping the gas as I started it, and it worked. But later, as I drove down the highway, she cut off on me. I took it to my mechanic, but he couldn't get it to stall out. He noticed that the throttle body was dirty, so he cleaned it up for me. At first, it ran well. In the past day or two, the car has been acting up yet again. I can be driving down the road, and she acts like she wants to cut off. The tachometer and speedometer go to zero...and it almost shuts off, or the engine does actually shut off. My mechanic said that it may need a new fuel filter. Is that what is probably causing this problem?

    It is amost certainly that the ignition coil on the car is causing your problem. The ignition coil is a winding of copper wire that transforms the 12 volts from the battery up to 30,000 volts that are necessary to fire the spark plugs. the ignition coil is also the source of the signal to the tachomter that tells you how fast the engine is going based on the number of times the spark plugs are "fired'. The ignition coils break down (go open-circuit or short-circuit) most often when they heat up. as they heat up the windings expand and either short to other loops reducing the voltage at the spark plugs causing a misfire or they go open circuit where no voltage flows to the spark plugs. Because it is temperature sensitive, it doesn't happen until the underhood temperatures rise high enough to overheat the coil It is usually hard to restart until the coil cools back down. I woud say that over 90% of the 91-93 accords have had the igniton coil replaced on them. as for the fuel filter, its always good to replace the filter periodically but on your car the filter is about the size of a soda can so it shouldn't be plugged. if it hasn't been changed in a while then it should be just for normal maintenance. my bet is you have a bad ignition coil. hope that helps

the tachometer and speedometer dropping out is a clue that you have an electrical problem. look for faulty ground connections.

The critical piece of information is that the speedometer also drops, which means it is 12 volt power that is failing rather than the ignition or any other engine system. A fuel filter sure won't help that! There are a few possibilities, including bad battery connections (those should be cleaned up on general principles) and the ignition switch. 1992 is before the Great Ignition Switch debacle of 1994 to who knows when but that doesn't mean the switch isn't failing. Catching this in the act can be difficult and all diagnostic techs hate intermittents, but if you can try your horn at the moment the speedometer and engine quit it will tell you if power is off everywhere in the car or just the ignition stuff.

Start with the least expensive problem, probably the fuel filter. Although that may indeed be electrical.

check the fuel pump. if your car has a IACV or a FIACV clean those out.
