Ideas for surrealism painting?

Abstract painting ideas?

  • I just bought a new canvas and I'm hoping to paint something abstract in it. I usually do realism/surrealism, so I think it'll be nice branching into a new type of painting. However I'm having a bit of an 'artists block' and I can't think of any ideas of what to paint, what should I paint?

  • Answer:

Close your eyes. Let your imagination flow; let the images in your mind dance around like bumblebees. Paint bumblebees. Paint them the wrong color. Give them swirly faces and distorted bodies. Look to your emotions. What's going on in your life? Paint your feelings. Browse art online. Get inspired. Read poetry. Read a book. Think about your favorite memory and paint that nostalgia. Open up your paint, set your canvas up, and paint. Just paint.

You don't want to waste the canvas, you could just wait awhile until you find an idea. Look at things around you. You could do lines, or a distorted humans face, a colorful nature scene that's been played around with. Draw a woman, a heart for her lips and seaweed for her hair. You can do anything.
