91 accord won't start?

91 Accord wont start, just cranks?

  • I have a 91 Accord and just replaced the Main Relay, Starter, Ignition Switch and Alternator. I replaced the alternator about a year ago maybe 8 months. I havent replaced the spark plugs in over 1 year about 1.5 years to be exact. when I try starting the car it just cranks but doest go all the way, just keeps cranking. i can smell gas when it cranks, and it was working fine yesterday, went to a few places and it didnt give me trouble just when I got home it wouldnt start anymore. what do u think it could be and how much would it cost to fix

  • Answer:

Assuming the timing belt is okay - if it has been replaced in the last 7 years we can move on (EDIT: come to think of it, the belt has to be basically working if you smell gas being pumped out) - the top suspect is the igniter (first source). Located in the distributor and bolted to the side with two *very* tight screws, it is the part the distributor connector on top actually plugs into. At 20 years old it has had a very good run - typical life is about 15 years. If you have not cranked the engine with no place for the spark to go the coil should be okay. Always give the spark a place to go when testing it - the first picture in the second source is from my son's Integra. My first replacement igniter was with a NAPA clone. It was about $100 instead of the $200 from Honda. It lasted about 2 years and resulted in a $300 tow. I bought a Honda igniter and it lasted the remaining life of the car (a long story there). The igniter can be replaced with the distributor in place if you can get the screws loose without stripping the heads completely. Or you could drill/cut the screw heads off and get new screws, which I think is what I ended up doing.

You smell gas? Under the hood or out the tailpipe? If it's getting out the exhaust, I think it's the ignition coil/module or timing. So, also make sure timing belt hasn't slipped/broken. These three things can happen quite suddenly. A few fouled plugs should Still give a "pop" or two.

are you getting spark and fuel?if yes to both then check compression and fuel pressure.

change the fuel filter, then if it still does not start check the fuel pressure,if the filter was clogged it may have stressed out the fuel pump, you maybe looking at a fuel pump replacement. The pump will get hot and won't force fuel to the injectors then when it cools it starts for awhile and it will shut off .well good luck.Maybe a broken or slipped timing belt.
