How do I tune my Vtec controller?

How do i take my vtec controller off of low idle, bcuz its making my car throttle out every now and again? ?

  • I have a 1999 Honda prelude, and the guy who had it before me has the vtec controller set to low idle. How do i take my vtec controller off of low idle, bcuz its making my car throttle out every now and again? Or is it something else that has my engine idling low????

  • Answer:

He could have changed the vtec kick in point in a number of ways. It doesn't sound like theres an actual vtec controller in your car. If he had the ECU adjusted or "chipped" you could try to reset it by disconnecting your battery. Leave your lights on to drain all power from the system. Wait 30 minutes to be safe and then reconnect the battery and see if that helped. If not then the changes may be hardcoded. You could also purchase a used stock 5th generation Prelude ECU and replace the one you have now. That should certainly work if you're absolutely sure theres not an aftermarket vtec controller somewhere in your car. You can recover some of your costs by identifying the actual changes on the ECU and selling it on Craigslist or Ebay.
