What is PS?

What's causing the PS pump to make noise...?

  • EG8 1.5 Single Cam Vtec Civic Automatic.....i notice at morning when i start the car & turn the steering to the extreme left (on park) something makes a slight grating noise.....i decided to get someone to turn the steering while i listen for the noise coming from the front of the car.....It was THE PS PUMP.....i bought a foreign used one Install it but NOW i'm getting a different problem......DURING driving & turning to the LEFT i'm hearing a slightly grating noise SOMETIMES.....but it's the SAME sound the OLD PS pump made....I returned the Pump got a replacement & installed a second time...this time when i turn to the RIGHT i'm hearing the same grating noise slightly (Only when driving)......i don't know what to make of this problem ....any suggestions...{ I changed the PS Fluid already...the steering moves freely (soft) as usual }

    Check the belt to see if it is too loose or too tight...Check the PS fluid level...If these are ok then you most likely purchased a defective pump..

I would suspect air in the power steering lines or the unit itself. I would jack up the front of the car and start the car and turn the steering wheel completely to the extreme left and to the extreme right twenty times and see if your noise is gone. Remember even though you have filled the power steering reservoir you can still have air trapped in the lines. If the above does not work I understand that rack and pinion steering units have "bleeder valves" on them where the air pockets can be bled from the lines. I have no personal experience with R&P steering units to draw from.

IF YOU EVER HAD A P-S FLUSH AT THE DEALER. THEY BUT A ADDITIVE THAT BREAKS DOWN CRAP. THEN THE RESAVOR GET CLOGGED. IT MAY NOT LOOK LIKE IT BUT I SEEN IT PLENTY OF TIMES. CHANGE THE RESAVOR.
