Honda 2000 Accord won't start.

Any ideas on belt squealing on first start-up on 2000 Honda Accord with 213,000 miles?

  • Just bought 2000 Honda Accord, just wanted to know if there were any issues with this type of car with that much mileage. Motor sounds good and the belts are taut. When I start it up, sometimes the belts squeal and quiet down. Just wondering if this is something I should be concerned about. Thank you.

  • Answer:

Either the belts are old and need replacement or they are really cheap belts. Buy Gates brand belts when you replace them. Check that timing belt with that many miles it should be replaced especially if that is an interference fit engine.

Other answers

The alternator/air conditioner belt is worn out and slipping on the alternator during start-up. The alternator load is highest right after starting, when it is trying to recharge the battery. Replacing the belt (and tensioner if it is a 6 cylinder) should take care of it. Modern belts do not look worn even when they are completely worn out. The wear appears inside the grooves and the EPDM material does not crack. Check out the tutorials in the sources.
