Is it ok to downshift when i race?

Ok so i'm wanting to drag race, what should i get a Honda or a Pontiaic?

  • ok so im wanting to start drag racing and i drive a 2000 honda civic but i dont want to race that i want to get another car to race but i cant deside between a firebird or a civic the firebird has a v6 in it but im going to do a v8 swap if i get that one,but i also know alot about a civic cause i do drive one and work on some. please help ~BEN~

    its all up to you on what you rather drive. if you know where to get parts you can build a civic CHEAAAPPPP. i had a budget built civic i spent about 1300 bucks on everything including the car. it had a T04e tial wastegate greddy intercooler hondata and rc 370cc injectors. with yokohama tires. i had 257hp to the wheels at 10psi and 227 tq. it was on a JDM d15b1 non vtec. 250hp on a car that weighs 1800lbs is sweet. and that was full interior. you can gut a civic to be close to 1400lbs thats awesome power to weight ratio. and im sorry you prolly cant even buy a v6 fireturd and a 350 and swap it in for that much. i love muscle cars and i love imports. and there is now replacement for displacement. in the long run your firebird or TA or camaro will have more ponys than a 1.6L civic. the whole reason i mod hondas is because i like technology any hillbilly can turn in a float screw on a carb. people always saw you can do the same mods to a american car (o and news flash YOUR AMERICAN CARS ANR NOT MADE IN THE USA THERE MADE IN CANADA AND MEXICO!!!) as you can to a honda but its so much more fun getting 500hp out of a civic and still being able to daily drive it and get 30mpg. if you really want a rush buy a sport bike and drag that its wayyyyyy more fun my gsxr runs 10.3 stock no can touch that for the money

It would be cheaper to get a V8 Trans Am than to drop a V8 in a V6. You'd have to switch the engine and get new shocks and tires and stuff. The Trans Am would be a MUCH better place to start since it's already faster that most cars. It's also RWD.

When all is said and done. You will get more horsepower out of an American V8 cheaper than an import. Unless you own a junkyard full of imports, it's far easier and cheaper to obtain high performance parts for a small block chevy, because its made in your country. (assuming you live in North America). The Honda will obviously be lighter to begin with, but it really just takes a weekend to do a significant amount of weight reduction to the Pontiac. Granted, Honda's have almost as much Aftermarket in the states as Domestics now a days, but you will save time and money building something that doesn't need a turbo and computer reprogramming to get 800 horse and 700 torque.

Ignore the people telling you to get a V8. I have a Honda CRX and I stomp on V8's all the time. Go with the Honda. You will be glad you did.

OK you can't decide between a economy car and a muscle car, which one you think would be better for racing?

Its much easier to race with a car that starts fast. Remember anything you can do to a Honda to make power you can do to a Trans Am and make power.

depends on your price range and goals. the civic will be alot cheaper and can still be quick. a turbo built gsr crx has the potential to run an 11. a v8 transam has the potential to run anything with the right money. a turbo lt1 4th gen would be awesome.. alot more expensive than the civic tho

The V8 Firebird is an easy upgrade but an H22 or a B- or K- series engine equipped Civic can be upgraded for crazy power. I rad an article about a streetable LS1 Camaro with Supercharger and built up dishing out 700 hp. Civics are also capable of that feat with only four cylinder engines plus no amount of weight reduction on a Firebird will ever make it as light as a Civic. Pricewise and ease of gaining big power, there's no replacement for displacement.
