Why won't my 1993 Honda Civic start?

1993 honda civic wont start?

  • so i left my lights on in my car while i went shopping...got a boost everything was fine dorve 45 mins home turned off car thinking the battery was recharged...i was wrong...alternator works fine i was told...when i turn my key over it makes a chugging noice likes its trying to start. If i hold my key over it eventually starts but is making a horrible noice....could my battery just be dead or is this more likely the starter?!

  • Answer:

i dont think is the battery but you should take it to auto zone to test it they doit for free. if ur battery is more than 2 yrz old most likely is the battery but if not it is gonna be the starter!!! good luck i have a 93 honda 2

most likely the battery is toast, might have a bad cell - the starter is fine, i know this because if you boost the battery and it starts then obviously the starter is good - the alternator is also good, i know this because the car continues to run after it has been boosted basically the battery provides the cranking voltage for the engine on start up, the alternator provides voltage the rest of the trip. the clicking noise you are hearing is the starter motor not getting enough power to turn over, and you are also hearing various relays clicking on and off replace your battery and all will be fine

So far everything is pointing to the battery being bad (it won't survive being completely drained anyway) except for the "horrible noise." If I understand right that noise is heard after the engine starts. The noise could be a lot of things, but if it is a loud screeching it is probably the belt slipping on the alternator because the alternator is trying to recharge the battery. That means the belt is worn out and needs to be replaced but probably means the alternator is still working well. Short story: unless the battery was only about a year old it is history. Even a one year old battery is not likely to survive the winter after being completely drained. It may even test okay now but it won't be okay for long - just replace it. At that point you have a new battery, which is a good feeling. If the screeching when it starts becomes common you should have the alternator belt checked or replaced.

probably the battery= who told you the alternator was OK why could they not diagnose battery the chugging as you call it shows a lack of battery power i would charge it before doing any thing else check the alternator drive belt at the same time it could have broken away completely (rare) nothing surprises as far as this goes, do you hear a squeal if you quickly accelerate the engine while in neutral or park if so belt needs adjustment or get professional help if this fails battery + alternator easily and quickly checked by professional i cannot go any further without specialist tools applied to your fault batteries can go dead in an instant.a good mechanic will have the tools and know how to use them!

your womans intuition is working just fine, from the brief details in the qu. i would guess at the starter too, either way an auto electrician would be preferred over a mechanic for my choice of repairer whether it was the starter or the batt or charging system. if you keep turning the engine over with a crook starter you can do damage to other electrical components in the starter circuit, so keep it off the road till you can get it repaired or it will cost more in the end. good luck, i like honda's

Pull the starter out or have someone else do it and get the starter tested before buying one, also have the battery tested. All the tests should be free at places like Pepboys, Kragen, Autozone, etc... Edit: Rofl @ all the thumbs down. Having the Starter AND Battery tested is a perfectly logical thing to do BEFORE going out and buying parts you twits. It's called diagnosing, not guessing.

I don't think that your alternator is working or charging properly. Sound like your battery is very weak to start your car. Check your alternator and battery. You can bring your car in any local battery shop in your area and they really offer free check up and testing of your battery

that clicking noises mean there is not enough power going to the starter so its just a loud clicking like eeeeeeeeh! mean you need a new battery the lights staying on may have just put it over the edge. definitely a new battery for your eg civic
