How to get speakers out of Pontiac Sunfire?

1996 Pontiac Sunfire...need a copy of the keys! Can I get it at Home Depot or somewhere cheap?

  • I only have one set of car keys and would like to make a copy. I have been reading online that if your keys have a "chip" in them you have to go to the dealer to get a copy. I want to know if my model has the chip or if I can get a copy at home depot or someplace like that. I drive a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire...that is pretty beat up so I don't want to spend much $ to get keys copied.

  • Answer:

No chip, no resistor. Anyone can copy it.

It probably does not have a “chip” And yes many stores can copy keys. However, they are copied keys and don’t always work perfectly. They often need to be wiggled to do the job. GM keys have a code number; the dealer can make an original key, from that number, not a copy! Only more luxurious cars have that like BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar…maybe some expensive GM In more recent years it is becoming more popular on low cost cars

I believe your car employs the GM passkey. The key contains a resistor, not a chip. The new key must have a matching resistor. Unlike a key with a chip it does not need to be programmed so it is not particularly expensive to replace but I think the key must come from a GM dealer.

It is very unlikely that a 1996 Pontiac Sunfire has a microchip in the key because of the age/model of the car. You should be able to get a copy made anyplace they make keys. You could also call a dealership and ask them to make sure.
