Changing the battery and low rpm when starting the engine?

2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue Problem - Battery and/or Alternator?

  • I tried starting my car last night (Saturday, 10/10/09), and my car wouldn't start up, my whole car was 50% dim than normal, my RPM gauge went from 0 RPM to 8,000 RPM, and my gas gauge went from the 1/2 tank to Empty, car dinged (unfasten seatbelt - driver) softer than before, and whenever I tried to start my car, the ignition cranked, everything was flashing, and when I turned my hazard lights on, when I opened a door, the dome lights will flash (dim to normal), and my power windows would go super slow, pause for 1/2 a second, resume up slowly, and that's how I knew that my battery is dead, and alternator. However, my friend's dad helped me jump-start my car, I thanked him, but before my car officially started, the car wouldn't turn over for the first time, the second time, I punched the gas pedal numerous of times, and started right up. Another thing I noticed was no heat or air coming through the vents. Can anyone please tell me if it's either both the alternator and battery, or just the battery or alternator? Thanks. My car is a 2001 Oldsmobile Intrigue, has a 3.5L Twin Cab v6 engine, 298 HP, and the car is 8 yrs. old. This is my first car, that I own, that has issues, major issues. Please help me; and thanks for your support, everyone.

  • Answer:

More than likely the battery is old. When did you change it last.

It sounds like it's your alternator. If your alternator isn't working everything is running completely on battery power, that's what is causing the battery to die. And if you've been running without your alternator for a while there's a chance your battery is flatlining too. Best advise is to take her down to Autozone or some other automotive shop and have them test the alternator!

You might not believe this, it sounds like the (fuseable link),the link is connected to the main fuse box(wich is the one in the engine compartment). you will have to get a Chiltons book to find out where the wire is leading...

Hi. I'm a bit of a mechanic so I'll tell you a simple way to diagnose whether it's your alternator or battery. First of all what I'd like you to do is when the car is on disconnect the negative post of your battery. When you do this, if the car stalls on you, and dies then that tells you the alternator is not charging the battery as it should, and therein lies your problem. You have a defective alternator. Your best bet is to go to Autozone and price your alternator which I've already done for you. It's either $281.99 or $219.99 depending on which alternator you choose to go with. Now Advance Auto Parts is in direct competition with Autozone so they have a 10% price match and discount which you can definitely get by simply taking them a printout from Autozone of the price for your alternator. Also there is another Godsend company called South Jersey Auto. They sell parts which are usually much cheaper than the aforementioned parties and their phone number is (856)-661-0011. They're located on Route 130 in Pennsauken, NJ across the street from Autozone. I hope this information was helpful to you and for you. Knowledge is power my friend, and thanks to the internet it's all there with the simple push of a few buttons. Good luck.
