Vauxhall cavalier running problem.

Running and starting problems with 1993 gmc safari van what is the problem?

  • I have a 1993 gmc safari van with w in 8th slot of the vin. I have had problems that are getting worse with the van. It all started when it died for no reason i while ago. I can start the van usually it starts fine. After it starts you can drive it fine but like i did 5 min ago i was smart and just let it run in the drive way. It ran for about 10 min then starts to seem to miss like it isnt getting enough gas. It will eventually die. Once it does that 99% the time it will not start back up for hours sometimes a day or so. When i went to start it first thing 5 min ago it turned over like 8 times then slowly started one i got it to start it idled smooth. I let it run for 10 min then it just died. No matter if you give it gas it just seems to give out. Now it wont start at all. it does this everyday now. I get about 10 15 min of running time out of it and then its dead the rest of the day. It will turn over all day long but not start. I getting fire to all plugs. I did have a esc engine code but fixed that. the connector to the knock sensor on left side engine had got brittle and connector broke. one I changed that i reset the computer and my engine light went of first time in 6 months. The running and starting problems existed way before I fixed the engine light. The fuel pump i can hear it priming. I dont have a fuel pressure gauge but will be getting one. I need to test fuel pressure when it running and see if it is dropping. The fuel pump is no more then 3 months old if that. I have all new plugs egr, o2, ilde control valve, and oil change. It isnt a bad gas problems cause i changed gas in tank to see if it was the. Fuel filter i changed yesterday too. It seems like car will run and then after 10 min no fuel is getting to injectors. When the car is running it runs great especially now that i fixed the esc(electronic spark control system) by fixing the knock sensor connector and the engine light went off. The other day I seen something odd that i have never seen before. While the car would not start I had key turned tring to start the car. While was doing that it was like someone was under hood and disconnected the battery. All my gauges when to their resting position. If n e of you know about car amps and how if something goes wrong the go into protect mode and shut off even during operation. That is like my car I was turning it over and then with key still turned attempting to start it all went dead. I turned key to off position and back to start and it started to turn over but not start. Is this prob a fuel delivery problem like a weak fuel pump or wiring problem that keeps a signal to pump to keep fuel going to engine. Its is like a phantom problem. Also While car was running one day and i was driving it all my gauges whet stupid. The speedometer cable started to jump around while i was going about 30 mph. it jumped down to 0 mph then to 50 to 40 to 80. I didnt notice if the others were doing it or not. I figured that was because the cable getting old or had a loose connection to transmission or to the instrument panel. When i was starting car like i told u before and all went dead it was like the car detected a short and something cut power to car. IF ANYONE CAN HELP THIS IS MY ONLY CAR AND I HAVE 3 KIDS AND BOTH WIFE AND I HAVE JOBS. WE CANT AFFORD TO BUY ANOTHER CAR OR REALLY EVEN PUT IN SHOP. If problem can be fixed that be great.

  • Answer:

Ok, one problem at a time let's tackle the starting problem first since that's the most important. Ok, the most important tool is the fuel pressure gauge, we need to know the fuel pressure.(4.3L W motor needs 60/65psi) Once you get a gauge and hook it up to the service port, turn the ignition switch to run /off run /off then run again this will build pressure in the system, now read the pressure, anything less than 55/60 psi is no good. If it goes to 60 then drops down quickly no good Since you changed the fuel filter yesterday, then the pump you installed is bad. I've seen many bad aftermarket fuel pumps, do yourself a favor and buy a GM pump (yes more money) but less headaches. Start with this and let us know the outcome. GOOD LUCK

Jesse's correct, get the gm delco pump, and if that thing still has a pulsator in tank, inspect it for split rubber inside of it.
