What is the grinding noise?

What can cause a low grinding noise while driving?

  • What can cause a low grinding noise while driving? ' 00 Ford Contour SE. My car has a low grinding noise any time I drive on the street or freeway. It only happens when I'm driving & not when parked in idle. If i take it to an auto shop they say that they don't hear it or tell me that's normal. The noise comes from one side of the car. It sounds like its metal grinding on metal but its not that loud. Its coming from under the pedals on the left side of the car. Does Anyone have any idea what it can be? I have changed the wheel bearings & Cv shaft that goes from the wheel to the transmission. Thanks.

  • Answer:

Its gonna be either your hub bearing or your brakes are worn,, Jack the car up on that corner, set the E Brake, put car in neutral and turn the wheel by hand, if you hear it right away its more than likely brakes. if you have to drive it to hear it, it will be the hub bearing. and also if you try and get movement in the tire - again hub bearing.
