Shar Pei X Pug De-shedding Help?

  • I just got a 1 year old female Shar Pei X Pug. She has the body of a Shar Pei and the rough horse coat associated with the breed. I noticed that when I pet her, a lot of fur accumulates on my hands and lays on her coat. I know pugs have a double layer coat and need to be brushed regularly but I didn't find anything on the Shar Pei's coat. I've tried a slicker brush and it doesn't seem to help. I've heard about the Shed Monster and the Furminator but I've heard that they don't work well on short haired dogs even though they have brushes designed for short hair. Has anyone used the Shed Monster on their dog? Does it matter if she has an undercoat or not to use it? And can it hurt her? I want it to be an enjoyable experience for the both of us! Also does anyone know of a shampoo that prevents the wet dog smell and improve shine after her bath? I love her to death but the smell well...stinks!

  • Answer:

Pugs shed like mad. Literally they shake off and you can see the plume of hair fly into the air. Shar peis shed heavily in spring and fall and regularly throughout the year. If she's smelling really bad she could have an allergy-induced skin infection as is common for shar peis. They also get a lot of yeast infections in their skin folds. For their coat and skin you want a rubber brush or mitt with rubber "teeth" on it for short haired dogs. You can use a shedding blade but be sure not to scrape the dog's skin, especially if yours has skin infections.
