I wanted to know what the symbol of a car on my dash board warning lights mean? Ford Focus 2002?

Today I noticed there was a symbol. it looked like a symbol of a car on my dashboard. I have a ford focus 2002. At first i thought it was telling me my doors were unlocked, checked that, they were fine. what is this symbol? i also noticed that the dashboard lights were not coming on. like at night as i drove, im supposed to get some sort of lights inside of my car from dashboard. i didn't get any lights. i don't want to spend any money trying to fix this. everything works fine on my car.

MIL light, you car has logged a code in its computer. Have a shop or someone with an OBD scanner run a scan. Try an AutoZone store if you have one, they do it for free. A scan will retrieve the code or codes and help you to diagnose what set off the light.
