Where is the starter located on ford trucks?

Where is the starter located on a 1994 Ford Mustang GT? What is the easiest way to remove and replace it?

  • I want to replace the starter, but have never done it before.

  • Answer:

It is located on the bottom passenger side of the motor. The easiest way to remove it with a socket, ratchet, extension, wobble joint, and a jack. If you haven't done this before it is best to get someone else to do it for you, or to get someone to help you.

First you need some mechanical requirement's (skill or inclined) and a Floor jack , Safety Stands For your Safety , disconnect the battery, either cable, best to do the positive, but either one will work , on level ground jack the said vehicle up in the jack location on the vehicle passenger side, if the vehicle is left hand drive OK, then support the vehicle with a safety stand before you go under it, understood? so far, when under the vehicle its a good pratics to be able to get out quick if need be, so don't get all comfy under there it weighs 2 tons and will squash you like a bug, OK so far ?,it looks like a one pound coffee can but it should be black in color with one wire attached one black 6 or 8 Gage cable big around like your pinky maybe a little smaller don't know how big you are so you have me so far ? there are three bolts 1/2 inch or 13 mm, depends on the motor and the actual production date of the vehicle ,maybe only two bolts OK, the starter solenoid is not on the starter motor its on the finder well, if three bolts one comes from the trans side two others are right in front going into the transmission bellhousing and turn the bolts counter clockwise to remove them ok, so far , suport the starter with one hand when removeing the bolts don;t let the starter hang on the studs ,while removing them it will much harder for you and harder on the threds as well , and it will come out, ok, now it weghs a fair amount and will crush your fingers or hand if you drop it on your self, so be ready for its weight ok, , now are you sure this is the problem ? cause 9 times out of ten the starter motor is not the problem its the solenoid, or other related battery cables connections, . so anyway take it to pep boys or auto zone and any name brand autoparts store and they will test it for free ok, if is good or bad when putting it back you must hold it into position, and start the bolts by hand do not and I repeat do not put the bolt in and just tighen it!! you will brake off the ears of the starter ok, must hold it position untill the bolts are run up then tighen then a quarter turn rememember your bolts are steel, and the threds are aluminum and you will strip em out, if in and doubt take or tow the vehicle to the dealer and have it properly diagnosed and or a good shop ASE recomended and will save you some greif, and have em only diagnosse it with an estomate first do not ok any work till they are postive what the do will fix the car , good luck , remember your life is more important than a starter motor so SAFTEY ALWAYS FIRST !!!!Take Care. & Good Luck
