2003 mustang mach 1 in car shows HELP!?
-
Ok so I have a 2003 mach 1, dark shadow gray with a flawless interior. I got it in January 2008 so in the 5 years i didn't have it, it acquired the usual swirling in the paint. There is also a very tiny dent in the drivers side front corner panel right in the crease by the door. Other than that, the car is in perfect condition. I live in maine and there are only 9 of these cars in this state (only 1500 ever made of this color and year) so this is a pretty rare car, at least in maine. so ive put it in 3 shows this summer. they gave out 3-4 trophies for every category. well i didn't get one. the first show, the mustangs were put into one category (which isn't fair) so the 3 trophies went to 3 1967 resto mustangs, which was expected. all i had done by then was upgraded the x-pipe and put on a k&n intake. i didn't really expect anything then the second show i had my windows tinted and the car looked immaculate. this time the mustangs were divided up and mine was in the 1973-present class. for cars, there was mine, two red fox bodies, which both were in need of a paint job, a black 2008 with an chrome under hood dress up kit, a 2007 STOCK v-6, and a red replica older mach 1. i was feeling pretty confident that i would get at least a third place....but i didn't. the stock v6 beat me out!! for the third show, they were giving away 4 trophies and there was only 5 cars in my class. i switched out the cat back exhaust and put on the SLP loudmouth, had chrome strut towers, radiator covers, and valve covers put on. this car shined! in my class there was my car, a black fox body 5.0 with a nice paint job, black cobra with rims, a black 2006 STOCK gt and a yellow STOCK v6 with the gt fog lights. so this time i knew i was getting a trophy. come on...what are the odds of getting beat by another stock v6. well trophies were being announced. there was 5 cars and 4 trophies. 4th place was the fox body, 3rd was the black gt, 2nd was the cobra, and 1st....the stock v6. does anybody know what a mach 1 is? how stupid do you have to be to pick a v6 over a mach 1? 4.6L DOHC 32 valve cobra motor with a 13.2s quarter mile, 4.8s 0-60 and 370 HP! What the f*ck is wrong with people? i almost think that its because im a 20 year old female and people look at me and think mommy and daddy bought it for her and she doesn't know anything about it. but trust me..i do and ive paid for everything!! now my question is... what the hell do i have to do to win a damn trophy? swap out the motor and put in a v6? seriously....i need to know. im in college so im limited to the amount of money i can spend and i have a 7 year warranty so i cant do anything extreme like slap a supercharger on or else they'll void the warranty the car has been very clean every show so i really am dumbfounded so help please!

Answer:
clean clean clean. judges look for dirt. places to make sure you clean: engine(of course) door jams(big one) small nooks and crannies Judges are more interested in the custom work than slapping on a supercharger Examples: fiberglass speaker enclosures, polished engine parts you dont have to spend alot of money to have a show car. its all in the attention to detail.

My daughter is into the show scene in Dallas area with her '08 PT and has the same problem getting beat by the Mustangs in the 2000 and over class. Her 1st trophy came at a benefit show, they were selected by how many ticket you sold, so guess what she did, she went and bought a handful and won a giant trophy ! Last week she went to a small show of 30 cars and won the 2000 class over the Mustangs. She said people just got tired of the Mustangs winning everything. A lot depends on who does the judging, most showes are a popularity contest, so get out there and mingle. and enter as many shows as you can.. Good luck and don't give up..

It's all about details, not the engine. Go a Mustang show, and you might see a super clean '65 coupe with a 6 cylinder beat out a '67 GT fastback that isn't as clean or well detailed. These shows aren't just judged on the engine, if that were the case then every car with anything less than the biggest most powerful engine for that year would not even bother. Every square inch of your car must be polished, cleaned, details, made flawless, then you have a good shot at it. For some added attention, add a nice chrome wheel, chrome catches attention. Something else that is nice, get whatever paperwork you can get about the vehicle, such as from Ford. Find out if you can get a copy of the dealer invoice, a History 999 report from Ford, and display with vehicle. That is the little extra stuff that makes judges take a deeper look at your car.

Try going to different shows! First of all I'm impressed that you're 20 and a girl and know something about mustangs...I don't mean to sound condescending, but that's pretty rare, also the fact that you can pay for it while you're in college is amazing! Anyway, if you really want to stand out, get a nice set of wheels, I'd go 19" or 20" chrome...don't get me wrong, I'm not into big bling, my 17" 03 cobra wheels suit my 94 gt vert just fine, but if you really want to catch some eyes you might need to go to that extreme. You can find low price replica wheels on ebay that function and look like their $1K counterparts. Also I wouldn't go smaller than a 10.5" width on the back, then if you can fit them (which you should be able to) put 305 or 315 tires on the back and 275 tires on the front (I've got 275s all around on mine). That being said, is your car lowered? Look into a 1" lowering coil-over kit. If you improve the stance (lower it) and fill the wheel well it gets a pretty solid look. After that you'll need a set of caster/camber plates to get your front wheels to stand up properly. I hope this helps, I've never put my car in any shows, nor do I intend to, but I know these thing improve the look of a car drastically. Also, do you have any pictures of your car somewhere online? I'd love to see it. P.S. I was reading your post about the trunk lid emblem, and yes, if you take the emblem off there will be a hole in the trunk lid. It's held on with adhesive and a screw.
