Pontoon /camper enclosure?

Would it be safe to carry a truck camper on my '08 F-350 dually if it doesn't have the "camper package"?

  • Ford offers a factory installed camper package on new trucks. I bought a truck, but it didn't come with the camper package. According to Ford (see https://www.fleet.ford.com/showroom/rv_trailer_towing/2008/08RVTTgdeSep08.pdf, page 6), the package must be on the vehicle in order to carry a slide-in truck camper. Would hauling a camper void my warranty or violate any regulations?

    The Camper Package includes a rear axle sway bar and a set of overload springs. The truck will be more stable with the package, but can carry a cabover without the package. If it were me, I would purchase the sway bar parts and install or junkyard one from another newer F250/350 (I'm sure some have already been wrecked :) Most smaller campers (under 9.5' floor length) will do fine without the overload springs.

I don't know about warantee but how will they know? I've hauled one on my 3/4 ton. those slide ins don't weigh that much and a dually will be plenty stable. I would guess the "camper package" would be a good way for ford to milk an extra few hundred bucks out of you. maybe it has trailer wiring? heavier springs? I doubt it, it's a one ton... maybe sway bars? a 5th wheel plate? I wouldn't hesitate a bit. good luck! ps. it's built ford tough. you can fill that sucker with lead and it'll still haul it better than a chevy! ;-)

i agree with boogie the aftermarket is flooded with suspension uprade parts that would more than likely be better than the factory parts anyway, besides its a dually theyre capable of pulling a house off its foundation lol
