My 1998 ranger 4x4 won't engage?

My 1998 Ford Ranger 4x4 will not engage any ideas to what is wrong?

  • I have been having problems with my 4x4 on my 1998 Ford Ranger. It seems sometimes it will work and other times it will not. When it is not working both the 4x4 high and low lights on the dash flash on and off about 8 times and continue to do so about every 10 minutes while driving. This has happened before then just started working fine for quite some time and has recently gone bad again. Any ideas as to what the problem is?? Thanks in advance.

  • Answer:

The electric motor on the back of the transfer case has sensors built into it. If you look at it you'll see it is an aluminum body with a plastic cover. The reason the lights on the dash are flashing is because the module doesn't know what position it is in because those sensors in there are corroded. The module doesn't look at hubs don't take apart. Get a motor and plug in befor putting on and see what happens. Ford had a lot of problems with this, getting a used one won't help you for long. New one is updated.

Usually the hubs just need cleaning. Get a spanner socket, remove the hubs clean, lube and reassemble.
