Where is the voltage regulator?

Where is the voltage regulator in a 2004 Ford Taurus?

  • I have a 2004 Ford Taurus that randomly gives a check charging system warning. After checking my alternator (report came back clean) and replacing my battery (Holds a charge), I am beginning to run out of charging system to check. I bought and installed a Volt Meter and have been monitoring it while I drive. I have noticed that while driving and there is no Check Charging System light, the Voltage is around 14.0 to 14.1. When the Check Charging System appears, the voltage is usually around 13.5 to 13.8 volts. Once the voltage returns to around 14 volts, the Check charging system warning goes away. This leads me to believe the Voltage regulator is not functioning properly. I know most voltage regulators are within the alternator, but I also know Ford has a habit of making them a separate unit. Where is the voltage regulator found on my 2004 Ford Taurus?

  • Answer:

The voltage regulator is built into the alternator.
