My Dog ate gum containing xylitol, but isn't displaying any symptoms. Should I still be worried?
-
About 5 hours ago, I found my 9 month old American bulldog chewing up a packet of orbit gum. I'm not quite sure how much he ate, but It was somewhere between a few pieces and most of the pack. I didn't worry about it at first, but it just crossed my mind. I read that xylitol can be very bad for dogs, and found out that the gum he had been chewing up did contain it. I read about some of the symptoms associated with it, but my dog doesn't seem to be displaying any of them even after 5 hours. Should I still be worried about him?

Answer:
If it were my own dog, I'd want to be certain that his blood glucose wasn't tanking. I don't know what the timeline is for this to happen, but given the mechanism, I suspect you might still possibly be early enough not to see any overt signs. Basically what happens is an inappropriate release of insulin as the body is unable to properly deal with the sugar alcohol. So -- they could be fine for a while, until glucose really tanks (FYI you're likely past the induce vomiting phase). So --- Your dog *might* be fine, but he might not. I'd be getting him to a vet to be certain.

If the dog swallowed the gum, take him to the vet, but otherwise you should not be worried

It's better to be safe than sorry. Obviously you are concerned, so call your vet just to be safe! good luck!
