Better engine for a 1997 ford escort?

Is the engine in a 1997 ford escort an interference engine?

  • 2.0l engine timing belt broke, i know the 1.9 was not an interference motor

  • Answer:

Timing belts are considered non interference? Hahaa, that's news to me. Don't listen to this guy...since he has no idea what he's talking about. Some engines are some aren't. My Escort is not, but my GF's Integra is, and BOTH use timing belts. And to answer your question correctly, the 2.0 is a non interference engine. If your timing belt sheers off some of the teeth and leaves you stranded, you will not have damage to your valves.

In general ford engines are non-interference, meaning a valve left open will not contact the piston. the Z-tech motor is one of these engines. so unless your belt failed at high rpm, you are safe to replace the belt without a valve job. This is not the case for most import engines, Honda/Acura being among the worst, and sometimes requiring a new head.

engines with timing belts are considered non-interference, a engine with a timing chain is an interference engine, if the chain breaks while being driven it will bend the valves, but i have seen an timing belt engine bend valves too, so it matters when it broke at highway speed you better check the valves on any engine
