Why does my 2005 ford taurus get 16 mpg?

We have a 1995 Ford F 250 Diesel . We use to get about 16-18 MPG when we first bought it. Now were down to 10?

  • We need any type of ideas we can get. This should get better in a diesel than 10 mpg. Most people are getting 19-20. We had friends that tried the chip and were not happy with it. It made the engine run noisier and more rough. So we want any other ideas to check out what is up. It only has 75,000 miles on it.

  • Answer:

    make sure the air filter is replaced each time the oil is changed, also add a bottle of diesel inj cleaner every 15000 miles or so. Valvoline makes a good cleaner, or BG products.

They make injector cleaner JUST for Diesels ! not cheap stuff.. hope U have been using it b 4 75,000

Other than routine maintenance, you may want to have the turbo checked for gasket leaks. These were known for blowing out the mounting gaskets at the intake.

Generally diesels get better economy as the get more miles on em they have a break in period I would take it to your local diesel tech and have it checked out.

ok this sounds stupid but take it to a dealer an have a tune up done yes diesels neet tun ups but they r different the a gas engine it has to do with timming the injector pump to the proper flow an preasure an timing the engine with the pump If there is a leek i the turbo intake side it will cause a power loss an increased fuel an if the turbo in not working right it will cause this same problum
