1995 Ford Taurus problems?

What Ford Taurus configuration should I get?

  • I'm attracted to them because of their low purchase cost and their low insurance cost. I've heard everything from a Ford Taurus is great to they're pieces of crap. So, does it have anything to do with the engines? And Transmissions? Because those are the only major problems I've heard about them. Do I want the 3.0L SFI Vulcan V6, or the 3.8L Essex V6? And do I want the 4-speed AXOD-E automatic, 4-speed AX4S automatic, or the 4-speed AX4N automatic? I believe the AXOD-E was discontinued after 1995. I'm looking for a car anywhere between 1994 and 2004. Thanks!

  • Answer:

My favorite Taurus is the model around 2000 that could be purchased with the 24-valve 3.0 liter. About 200 hp if I remember right vs. about 140 for the normal 3.0. They have a badge on the front that says 24 valve or DOHC and a dual exhaust system. I have seen them go about 150k before needing a transmission. I'd stay away from the early-mid 1990's because they often needed a tranny by about 60,000 miles. You're correct, they will hold up well, insurance is cheap and they are a good value. The trick is finding one that has been cared for.
