Does anyone know how many o2 sensors are on a 96 Ranger?

I have a 96 mustang and the O2 sensors keep failing?

  • I have had the car for close to 5 months and I am about to put my 2nd O2 sensor in (bank 2 sensor 2, passenger tail pipe), the engine runs great and I have no problems with the car except this. I just recently the check engine light came on and I read the codes and it told me the same O2 sensor is failing as before. I know there is probably an underlying problem that is causing the sensor to fail and I just what it is so I can fix it.

    If you had oil contamination, it would most likely affect the upstream sensor first, not the downstream. Make sure the wires aren't being melted. If you keep getting P0430, your O2 sensors are fine, but your cats are going. It's also entirely possible someone removed the catalytic substrate from the cats. Make sure you are not running an aftermarket tune.

Look for exhaust leaks. The exact nature of the code would also help. But often an exhaust leak throws off the ratio between inlet air mixture and outlet air mixture which results in an error code saying that the sensor is out of range or insufficient drop. The problem could also be that some one gutted the cat or even removed it. If that is the case price a mega-flow cat, on e-bay at least these are in the same price range as stock units. They come in direct fit (those are the ones I have used) and generic. I don't like doing a lot of fitting, so I avoid those.

Bad Cat, exhaust leak, etc. Another possibility is oil vaporization which is fouling the sensor. Switch to a premium motor oil such as Amsoil or Royal Purple.
