Can anyone tell me why my '94 Ford Explorer will only start when its not hot outside?
-
It doesn't have any problems starting when the sun isn't beaming on it, but will not start in the middle of the day when its real hot outside. Someone told me it might be the fuel pump, someone else said it might be the thermostat. Any ideas that could get me on the right direction? I don't want to spend an arm and a leg to see whats wrong just to turn around and spend to fix it. Please help?!

Answer:
The sun is making it hard to start? How about after it has run and warmed otherwise, are there start up issues then? Could be an ignition module. Electronics are strange when they get hot and are in a weakened state. Could be a "vapor lock" but unlikely. The prime could be bleeding off the pressurized fuel system but sounds electronic, needs a diagnostic machine hooked up for testing. Usually an hour labor charge at your local Ford dealer.

Get rid of it, I finally gave away my Exploder after it kept breaking down.

Because it's a piece of crap. No offense. Mid-Late 90's Ford Explorers are not great vehicles. They have all sorts of problems. My mom had one. Not a good situation.

I had a Ford van that did the same thing. It was the electronic ignition module. The tests to determine if thats what it is can be found in your service manual. (I always go to Auto Zone and find one that I can look at in the store instead of buying it) To replace the part I had to remove the distributor. Not too hard but not easy either.

I agree with the others of checking the ignition module for problems... That one is bolted to the body of the truck near the battery if I remember Their is no distributor on that model. Also the fuel pump could be loosing it's "prime" but you should be complaining more of a hard start than a no start... Bring it to a mechanic shop to let them catch it instead of the guessing game... BTW, the thermostat will NOT cause this problem at all.. who ever said that doesn't know anything about Fords

If you have an overly rich flooded engine condition due to a leaking fuel injector for example, then holding the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor while cranking the engine should help start the car. This tells the computer to stop pulsing the fuel injectors and opens your throttle plate all the way to let as much air as possible into the engine. My 1992 Ford Crown Victoria's 4.6Liter engine would do the same thing, and pushing the accelerator all the way to the floor and holding it there while cranking the engine would start it. If that works on your car, you'll know you may have a leaking fuel injector or other fuel related problem. Don't crank the engine longer than 10 seconds at a time to protect the starter motor from damage.

The ect, engine coolant temperature sensor, may be stuck on a cold position, or too much fuel pressue
