My 2001 Ford Explorer Sport is Possessed?
-
A few nights ago, I was coming off of the highway, and I noticed a rattling sound from under the hood- like a belt popped. before I knew it, the engine shut down and my braking system was off as well- i had to use the emergency brake to stop it. The steering system went out as well. The battery still supplies power to the radio and the headlighs, and it charged my cell phone as well, but the engine wont turn on. When I put the key into the ignition and try to start, it justs makes a brief "sneezing" sound.I have to have it towed tomorrow, but I was just looking for some insight before I did. What is wrong with my car? I have a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport, 103,000 miles.

Answer:
103k is not real miles for a 2001... Call me when it hits 150k in 6 years or so (like most of my customers) Without seeing it, I can't help you... I don't think it's a alternator or starter issue if the headlights are still glowing bright. I've seen some where the crank pulley comes off and slips the belt and will do exactly what you describe but without looking at it, I won't know for sure (I'm guessing) ..or something else causing the engine to lock up or stop (you have been maintaining it like the book says every 5,000 mile oil changes or less I hope)... The battery cable story is also something to look at, however we usually see this issue more upon starting the vehicle than goign down the highway.

It sounds like your SUV might be a Ford...there is no known cure for that. Sorry.

wow, that's some serious mileage for a 2001! It sounds like your timing belt or timing chain might have snapped. Whatever it turns out to be, good luck to you.

you lost your alternator or starter. you need to contact a ford dealer about the loss of power. you should still be able to stop and break. it also sounds like a possible electrical problem.

Wow, that's quite alot of miles. Maybe it's just tired, it might just need a new engine and some new bits and bobs to make it newish again :)

The mileage should be fine ;) A decent engine should be able to do 200,000 miles. A friend of mine has a collegue that requested a new company car because his had just hit 400,000 km (errm that's about 250,000 miles). But that one had a diesel engine, those are more robust. The company gave the car to a new worker btw :p It is still running. If you give your Ford Explorer good maintainance I think it'll be able to see 2013 ;) good luck
