How much does a mustang cost?

How much would it Cost to Restore an old mustang 1970's?

  • Well let me just say i'm young (19) and for some reason i just love older cars. I want to buy a mustang from the late fox body era but my dream is being able to drive a fully restored mustang (Or a Skyline converted to right hand drive ^_^). I've seen a nice older mustang near a gar station and it looks in decent condition but i know it will need some restoration. It looks like it's from the early 1970's period. I know these mustang are rare and desirable and i just want to know how much might it cost to FULLY restore one of these old cars. Keep in mind i know NOTHING about cars so don't get all technical with me. And i also know a great trustworthy mechanic who has been my family's mechanic since my great grand father. So how much will it be to fully restore a 1970's mustang? Just looking for opinionated answers nothing specific. Like give me a range of a price

  • Answer:

depends if you want a decent driver or show room condition. If you're talking about a 71-73 mustang they are a bit more rare than say 60's mustang are, and they are just starting to become desirable/collectable given how expensive nice/pristine 60's mustangs can be. But at least for right now even perfect examples probably aren't worth more than 25k (and we're talking boss 351/429 CJ's). ...and anything built between 74-78 is mostly junk as far most mustang fans are concerned. Since you said nothing about the specific condition (cause "decent" can mean a lot of things) so we can't really say. I'd just throw out 15-20k just to give you a number.Though since you said you know nothing about cars so if that's true I would just stay away from restoring anything until you know A LOT more.

Well I don't know how this man is alive if he was the mechanic for your great grandfather, but anyway. It would cost more than the car will be worth fished, you would be better of buying someones finished project, some people, like my neighbor, do that as a hobby and then sell them. You don't want a 70's stang, they are not too desirable you want a 60's one. You can find a beautifully restored one online for about $15,000-$20,000 with a 351 in it. If your not going to do it yourself and it has no sentimental value I suggest you buy a finished one.

Max above is mainly correct. The price of restoring the car would be MUCH more than it would be worth. First of all, Mustangs aren't rare at all. There are a million of them. Gutted and rusted. They are pretty much worthless because there are so many of them. My uncle has a 1966 in his driveway right now. Someone mistook him for an enemy and broke all of the windows out of his cars at his house. It has no windshield or side windows. They aren't even worth replacing because the value of the car is so low. The only Mustangs that are worth anything are the ones that are in showroom condition. They have to be original. Restored cars aren't worth nearly as much. Fixing up cars is the worst money pit. I was talking to a guy who does it for a living. He said it's the worst way to spend your money (he doesn't do it for himself. Notice: "for a living", he is paid to do it for other people such as your family mechanic above) and he said it's THE worst when you do it for sentimental value. Don't do it, you will EASILY spend $20,000 BEFORE labor on a car that won't even sell for $5000.
