How much labor would cost to put a engine in a f150 truck?

Help...what engine is the best choice to put in a used 98 Durango/SLT? Is it worth fixing?

  • I have 3 choices Engine with 23,000 miles for $1,800 -1 year warranty Engine with 70,000 miles for $1,450 - 1 year warranty Engine with 75,000 miles for $1,250 -6 month warranty the labor is going to cost me about 1,125 dollars I have already put 3,000 into buying the truck...LONG LONG story.

  • Answer:

My answer would depend on the size of the three motors referenced. If any of them are 360 cu. in. engines, discard them. If one of them is a 318, this would be my choice as the savings in gas between the two is significant. The 360 will suck gas like no tomorrow as the 318, while still a v-8, will be a lot better on your wallet. Good Luck PS: I didn't even consider that your rig might have a V-6. If this is the case, and saying that the rebuild of your engine or outright purchase of a rebuilt engine is not within your options, then I don't think a six month or one year warranty really matters if it is coming from a wrecking yard. I say this because it won't cover the labor, only replacement and you would be responsible for returning the engine, in the event that it fails in the warranty period. All I can offer if you are going this route is to carefully inspect all three engines for signs of prior work, (stay away from these) Ask if you can be provided with wet/dry compression tests. I f they will provide proof of this testing, take it to a reputable mechanic for interpretion. Now, good luck.

WOW!! Could I propose and alternative direction?. Get in the yellow pages under automotive engine rebuilders. I am not sure where you live, but you can get your engine rebuilt with 36,000 mile warranty for UNDER $2000 drive out! As to worth keeping, my 1998 Durango has 100,000 miles on it and I love it. Good Luck

Don't get any of those listed. Get a rebuilt engine with 0 miles. Why spend betwen $2500 and $3000 for an engine that will most likely only last a year?

Otto

Do yourself a favor, whichever eng you get, before installing it pull the oil pan off and clean the crud out of it and the oil pickup screen. Just do it.
