Question about the Ford Ka?

Ford Ka Mechanical Question, advice required prior to going to the garage?

  • I have an S registered Ford Ka which has served me well, it recently has developed a problem that will I think require a mechanic to sort out but prior to this id like some pointers so that they dont try to rip me off at the garage. The problem is this When im driving it and coming up to lights for example it seems to rev without any pressure on the accellerator, sometimes this reving is very severe others not, also when driving down the orad occasionally you can take your foot off the gas and the car will still carry on going ( akin to cruise control! ) you can drive for an age and the car acts as if you are still pressing on the accelarator. Any advice appreciated obviously this isnt normal and as you can tell by this I ant at all mechanically minded!

Common Fault on these is faulty Throttle Position Sensor

your idle speed control unit is on the way out

sounds very much like the throttle position sensor though the idle speed control valve may be at fault too. it is not a Major job to replace normally having a simple electrical plug to disengage and a couple of locating screws to remove. If you are having doubts about fitting it ask a Friend to assist and maybe borrow a workshop manual (library?) a breakers Will be much cheaper than a dealer replacement and you can find out how it comes off at same time.

Sounds like a sticking throttle cable. Might need some WD40. If you can squirt some down the casing of the cable it might cure it. Also quirt some everywhere where you can see movement when you tug the cable under the bonnet, especially on springs and pivots. It's worth the cost of a can to see if it frees off the components, as it usually does.
