How can I connect my TV to my laptop?

How can I connect my laptop to my TV with a VGA to HDMI converter?

  • I bought a special converter to hook my laptop up to my TV as my laptop has no HDMI port and my TV doesn't have a VGA. It was an expensive cable £35 as apparently it needs to convert the signal from analogue to digital or something. Everything is plugged in but the laptop is not recognising the TV and the TV is not getting anything from the laptop. I have tried looking in the: control panel; display; advanced; adapters menu but there is only my laptop's monitor in there and an option to switch between a low or high resolution. I have searched for new hardware and stuff but get nothing. Any help greatly appreciated.

  • Answer:

You mention in your question that "It was an expensive cable..." When converting VGA to HDMI you cannot simply use a cable to do the conversion. Because you're converting an analog (waves like AM radio) to a digital (1's and 0's) signal the conversion can't be done in a single cable. Are there any other inputs you have on your TV other than HDMI? You mention it does not have a VGA port, but does it have a DVI port? RCA ports? Go ahead and use this form to determine what connections might be best (or cheapest) for your laptop to connect to your TV. http://www.connectlaptoptotv.net/p/how-to-connect-laptop-to-tv-decision.html

First off make sure your tv is on the right input. If it is and your using windows 7 right click on your desktop background, then hit screen resolution. That will open up a window, on that window there should be a "Display" with a box next to it; click that box and there should be an option for something else besides what it was, click that and it should go.

I will add one thing to the already mentioned answers. You need to make sure you change the monitor output it is the FN key and usually f4 or one of the other f keys it should look like a monitor or 2 screens try hitting that and see if you can get the image to your Tv
