Ford Cortina Question! Is my memory playing a trick on me?

  • I am having a debate with some of my work colleagues about a Ford Cortina. Please excuse my ignorance as I know nothing about cars. When I was a kid my Mum had a Ford Cortina, either a mark 4 or 5. It had electric windows and power steering and a sunroof, and I think it had a vinyl roof. However one of my colleagues says that you couldn't buy cortinas with power steering, but I remember it! Is my memory playing tricks on me, or were any cortinas made with power steering?

  • Answer:

hi, My first car was a mk5 2L ghia (x reg)it had all of the above and power assisted steering if my memory serves me right? Comfy old car she was too! Pale Blue Velour seats and a walnut dash.................hmm nice. The steering was quite light considering the weight of the car and it's age. Side Note: The Ford workers affectionately dubbed it the "Dagenham Dustbin".

Mk 4 Ghia had Power steering. So I would think the last MK 5s did.

I had a 2.3 Ghia S in white with a brown vinyl roof, sunroof and power steering as well as a 2.3 GL estate also with power steering You are correct and your mate is talking b******s

Timbo is here

In 1982 for example, there was power steering with the 2.3 V6 engine on GL and Ghia Download the brochure from talkford.com (you may have to join the site)

I'm sure the larger engine models had power steering, and believe it was optional on the smaller-engined ones. My dad had a Mk4 2.0 S, which was right-hand drive, but a German import, in Olympic Blue with Rostyle wheels, a boot spoiler, 4-speaker radio-cassette, and bucket seats with integral headrests. I was on his insurance, and enjoyed many miles in that car, pulling a naughty 100mph down a long hill, whilst still a Learner, on the way down to the West Country one Summer! Given how cool, funky and retro they look, and that they keep external noise down, I'm suprised that vinyl-roofs aren't rather more popular. I'm a big fan of the Triumph Dolomite, and they always looked good with a wig on. ;-)

Please punctuate properly, folks

there wasn't any stock Cortinas with power steering but it's pretty easy to mod. edit: actually there were a couple later ones, so yeah it's not your memory

Sounds like a Ghia, possibly the 2.3 V6 which would probably have had PAS.
