Can an engine overheating damage a transmission/clutch?
-
My engine overheated due to a botched rad flush. The next week my transmission wasn't shifting properly. They said it was the clutch, and replaced. My transmission still doesn't shift properly. Just a coincidence, or does the shop owe me my money back for the clutch they just put in?

Its most likely just a coincidence

you probably needed both and nothing to do with the radiator.

Well, an overheating engine will not effect a manual tranny. It could cook an auto tranny since the cooler is in the radiator.

It could be related. The coolant/anti-freeze helps keep the tranny fluid running smooth and cool. May have caused a problem. Might want to get a tranny flush and go from there

If it's an automatic, yeah. You have upper and lower transmission lines connecting tou your radiator. Therefore the coolant cools your transmission. Manual? The heat can destroy anything. Depending on your miles, you may have a coincidence. If not replaced in the last 45,000 miles or so.

Here is what happened and it happened to me. I had my 1964 Galaxie 500XL radiator rebuilt. A few weeks later my trans started to have problems so I took it to a tranny shop, they told me the trans was bad SO we rebuilt it. A few weeks later the tranny began slipping again, once again back to the trans shop. They told me the trans was wasted again, and still under warranty also said they should have told you there was water in the trans. Your automatic trans cooler that is part of the radiator is bad and water is leaking into the trans cooler and into the trans. My transmission froze up all together. Probably when you did the radiator flush the radiator core was worn or old. Once you flushed the system the trans cooler wall was rotted and removing the gunk opened a few small holes and leaked water into the trans. Water is the worst enemy of any trans especially when you keep driving it, water is all over the inside now. Your fluid maybe pink or black, pink is usually from a mixture of antifreeze and red trans fluid as it heats up and bubbles. If you follow the lines to the trans that is the trans cooler. You should replace the radiator and then if possible flush the trans if it is not to late to save it. The radiator can be repaired at a good shop, but the trans needs to be completly flushed and hope it saves it. Make sure you tell the radiator shop the trans cooler is leaking.
