What does a modem and a router do?

My router causes my dsl modem to lose connection, what do i do?

  • I have recently switched my ISP to Centurylink. I purchased my own DSL modem from actiontec (GT701D) and set it up with my router (Belkin F5D8233-4). My dsl internet connection is fine if my computer is connected directly to the router via an Ethernet cable. The problem is that when i connect my router to the modem and have at least 2 devices connected to the router, the dsl light will begin to flash and the modem will lose its internet connection. I dont know if there is just an incorrect setting on the router or the modem but i believe that because my computer can work just fine on the internet when it is directly connected to the modem, that the problem is in my router.

  • Answer:

"I have recently switched my ISP to Centurylink" Did you reconfigure your router correctly, or is it still configured for your old ISP? Be sure to set the router's connection type to PPPoE, as it may have been set to use DHCP with your old ISP.

could be overheating. check it see if the vents are clear on the router. depending on the devices connected, one of them could have upnp on, and it would change the settings of the router upon connection....
