How many miles will a 2003 Ford Explorer last?

Should a mom-to-be buy a 2003 Ford Explorer Limited with 60k miles?

  • I currently drive a '95 Ford Explorer XLT with 151k miles. It is running well but my husband (who takes excellent care of our vehicles and is a mechanic himself) wonders how much longer it'll go. We love the car in general and are having a baby in July! We like that a new baby in a used car with leather seats will likely cause us less stress than a new baby in a new car -- plus messes and such. We wonder if a newER car with baby is smarter. He saw a FSBO '03 Ford Explorer Limited yesterday, very nicely loaded (leather seats, heated seats, sunroof, etc.), with 60k miles, well taken care of. He loves it because it seems to have everything we'd want in a used car. I like it, but the mileage bothers me. The asking price is fair according to Kelly Blue Book (around $16k). I wonder if I could do better on mileage -- but then finding it with all the options would be the issue. Is 60k at $16k too many miles for too much $$$ for how long this car might last us? Keep shopping or buy it now?

  • Answer:

personally i would drive the old one until it gave me some trouble. I had a car i put 300K miles on without incident. Drive er till she dies I say.

Kelly blue book is out dated. Use a N.A.D.A book, all dealers have them. That truck is worth less then 10K, as is. Forget the tree hugger, get a good suv that makes your family safe, you like the Explorer so stick with what you like, not what some tree hugger says is better for the air. You new baby will appreciate the explorer more than any fuel saving death trap.

NO, for one, babies cost a lot. two they take too much gas, and three they are not environmentally all that friendly,, get somthing else, if you want more space, try somthing that has space, but light, and gets good gas, and is safer on our disapearing environment.

Keep shopping. That is too high for the mileage. You could get it for around 10K at a car dealership and have your husband check it out. The question you want to ask yourself is how long will it take your current car to cost you based on gas prices and then you will have a car payment. I would say if it still works don't go get another and incur another debt with a new baby on the way. Good luck and Congrats on the baby.

I would say keep shopping. I used to have a 94 Explorer and I loved it!!! but I wouldn't go for an '03 with 60k miles, that could mean that there has been too much wear and tear put on it. I mean, if you really feel that it's the right car for you and your family, then go for it (you do have a mechanic for a husband), but if it would end up being an impulse kind of thing then I'd say, keep searching! You could even look for a fairly used Ford Escape, still an SUV, still good amount of space, still a Ford (if that's what you're going for) but better on gas and if you got a Hybrid Escape, it would be better for the environment and better for your wallet (save on gas). Congrats! on the baby and good luck in your search :o)

Don't buy it. I would recommend a Ford Freestar Van. Better gas mileage and the automatic doors you will love when having kids. I know you don't want to think about a van probably, but very good.

If money is an issue I would keep shopping. There are a lot of Explorers out there. 60K is about average mileage for an '03, maybe a little high. 16K is about average price for an '03 but also maybe a little high. You could still upgrade without spending so much money. Have you considered a '00 or '01? You may find one with less than 100K miles for less than 10K dollars. It all depends on whether or not you can afford it. Consider all of your other expenses and if you can afford it, you think it's in good conditon, and you like it, buy it.
