Why is my 89 dodge dakota idling rough and cutting out?
-
Ok, Its a 89 dodge dakota, 4 cylinder 2.5 liter engine, SOHC, and its a 5 speed. When I start it, It idles really low, When I am going down the highway it will all of a sudden bog down and the gas will be nonresponsive and it will die out. If I try to start it with the ignition after it dies out by itself it will just turnover until it floods itself. So when it dies out I have to drop it in a lower gear and FORCE it to start with the clutch. I checked my fuel pressure, It is only registering 18 ppm, and it should be registering between 35 and 40. I have replaced the fuel pump, Fuel Filter, Fuel Injector, Distributor Cap, Rotor Button, and the Plugs and Wires. It hasnt helped the situation at all with everything I have replaced. Somebody have a suggestion? Serious answers only please. THX

Answer:
There could be many reasons why your truck is doing this. There could be an air leak at the base of your throttle body such as one of the insulator gaskets. The intake gasket itself could be leaking. If your truck has a mass air flow sensor this could be faulty, or you may have been sold a faulty fuel pump. Possibly your gas tank is not venting properly, i.e the gas cap could be corroded. Some dodges have a small ceramic electrical insulator on the firewall, cheap and easy to replace. Good luck! An easy way to check if you have an intake gasket leak is to take a propane torch and turn it on without lighting it and run the nozzle around your intake gasket and your throttle body while the engine is idling. If your engine changes pitch while you are doing this, you have found your leak.
