What does make a car engine technically a six pack?

Engine HELP!!! Small or Big Block? MOPAR!!!?

  • For a future sense, I am still deciding what I am going to put into a 1968 dart. Right now I have a 1970 318 barracuda engine and I was thinking that, for the moment, just putting that engine in there till I can get the money to fix my car little by little. With regards to the 318, I was wondering if it could hook up to the (what I think is a) 904 transmission I have in my donor car. The 318 came with (what I believe to be) a 727 transmission, but I don't want to make a hole in the floor of my car to set in the transmission knob or whatever. (It was said to have come with a converter or something) Second, do you think this is a good plan for restoring my dart? I was thinking that this summer I can fix all the body and interior. That means replacing panels from the donor car to the hardtop I have. Taking the trim from the donor to the hardtop (btw, I think I am missing trim that goes around the bottom of the roof, right under the trimming for the back window, would it matter if it was not there or would i have to customize or find trim? I wanted to two tone the car to have a metallic green body with a black roof.), I would take out the already refurbished seats and paint the inside the color I want. I have one problem with the interior, all the metal parts are red (Dash, steering wheel, carpet which I will probably replace since it is a little ripped, some of the panels) and that needs to be black so should I just paint it or should I try to replace the dashboard with the one in my donor car and paint the rest? So that is pretty much all I would do this summer. Should I put in the 318 engine now, maybe I can drive on it for occasional fun? Next summer, depending on my finances I was wondering if I should get new breaks and rims/tires and also buy a new suspension kit I found online (approx $6-7k for everything mentioned). I don't know if I should put in the 318 engine again or should I wait another year before I buy a better engine? Then any time after that, when I get money, I really wanted to buy a 440 engine. So I was wondering if there was such a thing as a Short/Small Block 440? And what would be the difference from a Long/Big block 440. Does using a short block make it have less power or make it lighter? Could you put a six-barrel carburetor onto a short block to make it into a six-pack? Would it fit into a 1968 Dodge Dart? And any ideas/websites for any good MANUAL transmissions to go with a 440? THANK YOU MUCH!!!

  • Answer:

if you want to put the 318 in for now that would be fine in it,i did in mine until got the money to finally build the 360 up i got in it now,the four speed transmission for the standard shift is the same as the big block model is,you just change the bell housing on it,if you ever rode and drove a good small block like im running you wouldn't even think about a big block in it,the big block is a heavy engine also,id go with a 360 with 727 transmission with a shift kit,it would be more than you could hold in the road right now,i guarantee you this,500+ horse power is a lot in those cars, good luck.
