How can I connect my xbox and PC to my router from my main cable modem?

I'm trying to connect a router to my modem so that I can connect my computer and my xbox to the router. The main question is how to on configure the router so that it connects to my modem. My set-up now: Internet cable from cable motem goes to my room. so now im trying to connect that to my router, than im going to connect 2 cable to the router to my PC and Xbox but I don't know how to make it work. Please help! :(
