Help with 1996 Avenger?

1996 dodge avenger 6cyc automatic, my problem is it will not shift into 3rd? shift sensor? please help?

  • dose my avenger have some kind of shift sensor? transmisson was rebuilt only 2 years ago. this is the only thing wrong with it? no slipping no leaking or other transmission problem? i have been told that my transmission is shot again? i really don't think so!!! is this right or wrong, help me please!!!! :)

  • Answer:

Your tranny is in limp mode. There are two speed sensors an input speed sensor and an output speed sensor located on the front of the tranny Does the Speedometer still read ? If not you have a bad output speed sensor The other sensor can cause it to not shift as well. The sensors are cheap $30 or so you can try them from the junkyard as well

try checking the speed sensor, my 98 dodge ram did the same thing, looked at the rear end speed sensor and it had about a 3 inch adapter where it plugged on to the differenchle, i took the extension off and plugged it back in and it shifted, there could be a short in one of your wires like mine. good luck
