How do you find vacuum leak on a 91 pontiac grand am?

My 2003 v8 durango has a vacuum leak how do i find it by myself?

  • any quick tricks on finding a vacuum leak. with all those little tubes it would take me a million years to find it. its probably a little crack in one of the tubes but dont know where to start. i looked for about 20 mins one day and got so fraustrated i gave up. dont want to take it to a mech. cause its such a easy fix if i can find it and dont want to pay a arm and a leg for something so petty

  • Answer:

Get u an empty windex bottle and put soapy water in it and spray the vacuum hoses while it's running....If any r present, then bubbles will appear...Just like checking 4 a leak in a tire

If your truck is using oil then it could be the plenum pan gasket that is leaking vacuum. Another symptom of that is detonation as the oil that gets sucked into the leaking plenum(from the lifter valley) finds it's way into the cylinders effectively raising the compression ratio. No quick easy fix of that situation. If it is a leaking vacuum hose or diaphragm, then invest in a hand operated vacuum pump. They're sold at auto parts stores, and are very helpful in diagnosing leaking vacuum diaphragm. They come with instructions to tell you how to use them. Also very useful for bleeding brakes. If you can actually hear the vacuum leak, I'd bet that is where the leak is.

The best way and best thing to use is an aresol that sprays a mist like wd-40. Start the car and the leak will suck the mist down where it is.

ALLAMERICAN

Spray some WD40 on the lines and fittings. The motor pitch will change when you hit the leak.

Rainman

Soapy water in a spray bottle and start spraying but don't spray on the electrical components.
